What is Gates of Olympus?

Gates of Olympus is a 6×5 "scatter-pays" slot released by Pragmatic Play in 2021. There are no paylines: you win when 8 or more matching symbols land anywhere on the grid. Winning symbols are then removed and new ones tumble down, so a single spin can chain several wins in a row.

What made it a phenomenon is the multiplier mechanic. Zeus randomly drops glowing orbs carrying multiplier values from 2× up to 500×. During free spins those multiplier values add together and apply to the whole round — which is where the biggest wins come from. The trade-off is very high volatility: long dry spells punctuated by rare, explosive hits.

How the engine works

This is the part most guides skim. Understanding it is the difference between "I have no idea why I won" and reading a round as it unfolds.

Scatter pays vs paylines

Traditional slots pay along fixed paylines — symbols have to line up left to right in set positions. Gates of Olympus throws that out. It uses scatter pays: position is irrelevant. Land 8 or more of the same symbol anywhere on the 6×5 grid and you're paid, whether those symbols are clustered in a corner or sprinkled across all six reels. Bigger groups (10+, 12+) pay progressively more. With 30 cells and only a handful of symbol types, near-misses feel constant — which is exactly what feeds the tension.

The tumble loop

Every paid combination triggers a tumble. The winning symbols are removed, everything above drops down to fill the gaps, and fresh symbols fall in from the top. If the new arrangement contains another 8+ group, you're paid again and it tumbles again. The chain continues until a tumble produces no win, which ends the spin. A single paid spin can therefore stack four, five or more consecutive wins before it settles.

Multiplier-orb math

This is the heart of the game. At any point Zeus can hurl multiplier orbs (2×–500×) onto the grid. How they apply depends on where you are:

• Base game: an orb multiplies the total win of the tumble sequence it appears in. One 25× orb on a winning sequence multiplies that sequence's payout by 25.
• Free spins: every orb that lands is collected and its value added to a running total. At the end of each tumble sequence, all collected multipliers are summed and applied to that sequence's win.

A worked example for free spins: suppose during one tumble sequence the symbol wins total 20× your bet, and three orbs land showing 10×, 50× and 4×. Those add to 64×. The payout for that sequence is 20 × 64 = 1,280× your bet. Now picture a longer sequence where orbs stack to 200×+ on top of a chunky symbol win — that is how a session lurches from nothing to a five-figure-multiplier hit. The orbs are random; they don't appear on every spin, and most free-spin rounds will not produce a giant total. That randomness is the volatility.

Symbols and payouts

The premium symbols are the crown, hourglass, ring and chalice; coloured gems pay low. The Zeus scatter triggers free spins (4+ anywhere = 15 spins, retriggerable — landing 3+ more scatters during the bonus adds spins).

Ante bet and Bonus Buy explained

Two optional bet features change how often the bonus shows up — and what it costs you.

Ante bet. Switching the ante on raises your stake (commonly by around 25%) and, in return, roughly doubles the chance of triggering free spins by increasing scatter frequency. You're paying more per spin to reach the bonus sooner. It does not change the max win, and the long-run RTP is broadly comparable to standard play — you're trading bet size for bonus frequency, not buying an edge.

Bonus Buy. Where local rules allow it, you can pay a fixed multiple of your stake (often around 100×) to jump straight into the 15 free spins instead of waiting for scatters. It guarantees the feature, not a profit — you can still walk out of a bought bonus with less than you paid. Bonus Buy is prohibited in several jurisdictions (the UK among them), so the button may simply not appear for you. What to expect: volatility in practice

"Very high volatility" is a label; here is what it actually feels like at the reels. Expect long stretches with little or nothing back — twenty, thirty, sometimes many more spins that drift sideways or down. The game is engineered so that the bulk of its return is concentrated in rare, large events, almost always inside free spins where the multipliers add up. Between those events, your balance erodes.

That has practical consequences. A bankroll that survives a low-volatility slot can be wiped out here before the bonus ever lands, because the dry runs are deeper and longer. Sensible play means a smaller bet size relative to your bankroll than you'd use elsewhere, so you have enough spins to give the feature a realistic chance of appearing.
